Setting Up Your Modem
Aladdin makes intelligent use of the modem interface lines and
requires that the DCD, DTR, CTS and DSR interface signals
reflect the true status of the modem and/or cause the modem to take
specific actions. Many communications programs do not care
about the status of these lines, but Aladdin does care, so you
may need to reset some of the defaults in your modem to get
Aladdin to work.
If Aladdin will not dial the modem, and displays an "On" status
indicator on the rightmost field of the bottom line of your
display, indicating that it thinks that your modem is on-line and
that it is currently connected to a remote computer, your modem
lines are set wrong and need to be reset as follows.
For a Hayes Smartmodem 1200 or clone that uses switches to
control these lines, use the following settings:
Switch Setting Comment
------ ------ ----------------------------------
S1 up Support DTR
S2 up Verbal Result Codes
S3 down Result Codes are Sent
S4 up Echoes characters in command state
S6 up Carrier Detect Line Reads Status
If you have a Hayes Smartmodem 2400 or clone that uses the AT&
command set to control these lines, enter the following command
string from terminal mode:
AT&C1&D2&R1&S1&T5&W
This will set normal operation for the DCD, DTR, CTS and DSR
lines, disable remote loopback testing to increase reliability,
and then write these settings to non-volatile memory as the
default. (Not all modems support the &R1, &S1 and &T5 commands.
The &C1, &D2 and &W commands are the most important ones.)
Please refer to your modem owner's manual for more information
about these configuration switch settings or commands.
